What is a Currency?

A currency is the type of money a country uses. Just like pounds (£) are used in the UK, other countries have their own money with different names, designs, and values.

Fun Facts About Currencies!

💰 There are 180 different currencies in the world today!🌍 Some countries share the same currency, like the Euro (€) in many European countries.🔎 Some money has secret security features, like holograms or hidden symbols, to prevent copying!

Common Currencies Around the World

1. British Pound (£) – Used in the UK 🇬🇧

The British Pound Sterling is one of the oldest currencies still in use today. Did you know? The £ symbol comes from the letter ‘L’ in the Latin word "Libra," which means pound of weight!

2. US Dollar ($) – Used in the USA 🇺🇸

The US dollar is one of the most widely used currencies in the world. Other countries, like Ecuador and Panama, also use the US dollar even though they aren’t in the USA!

3. Euro (€) – Used in many European countries 🇪🇺

The Euro is used by 20 countries in Europe, including France, Germany, and Spain. This makes traveling easier because people don’t have to change money when moving between these countries!

4. Japanese Yen (¥) – Used in Japan 🇯🇵

The Yen is Japan’s currency, and it has some of the most beautifully designed banknotes, featuring cherry blossoms and historical figures.

5. Indian Rupee (₹) – Used in India 🇮🇳

India’s currency is the Rupee, and its banknotes feature Mahatma Gandhi, who led India to independence. Each note has 17 different languages written on it!

What About Coins? 🪙

Many currencies have both coins and banknotes. In the UK, we have pennies (p) and pounds (£), while in the USA, they have cents. Some countries even have plastic (polymer) money, like Australia and Canada, which lasts longer than paper!

Why Do Currencies Have Different Values?

Not all currencies are worth the same. For example, £1 is not equal to $1. This is because of exchange rates, which change based on how strong a country’s economy is. But why do these values change? Let’s break it down in a simple way!

What is an Exchange Rate?

An exchange rate tells us how much one currency is worth in another currency. For example:
  • £1 might be worth $1.25 today
  • £1 might be worth €1.15 today

But these values change constantly based on how strong or weak a country’s economy is.
